Three Songs and Two Activities

New semester, new Media Center activities and songs! We've got three songs to share, and two activities.

This torch song has a slow pace, so even though the lyrics might be a challenge, the speed might be nice for lower-level students. Adele gives an interview at the start of the video, which might be a nice listening exercise for a more advanced group of students.

This song is repetitive and rhythmic, and it is often featured in commercials and TV. The lyrics provide a chance to study some idiomatic language.

This song might be nice for intermediate to advanced students. The lyrics are distorted, so it's more of a reading exercise than a listening one - but the lyrics might be good for sparking interpretation and class discussion.

One of the activities is an online interactive game about city planning, sponsored by the BMW Guggenheim Lab, currently up through October 16 in the East Village. (Perhaps a good field trip option?) The interactive game poses questions that city planners might face, and when you are finished, the game suggests what world city each player's fictional city is most like. The questions are good for critical thinking practice as well.

The other activity is based on a video for an upcoming documentary called Hope Town. Voice of America, in conjunction with Alhurra (an Arabic language television station) went to Teaneck, New Jersey to learn about how religious tolerance works in that community. When you click through the link above, the video is the first on the page. (I am not able to embed it.)

Media Center Workshop: Recording With Your Students

When we surveyed faculty about their use of the Media Center, we found that many teachers would like a workshop on recording with students. So, here is that workshop!

We will cover the basics of creating and saving recordings in the lab, and most importantly, you will have time to practice the process with assistance and without a roomful of students. We will also set aside some time to talk about ideas for working with recordings and to look at some online resources.

We hope to see you on either Tuesday, September 27 or Wednesday, September 28 from 1:00 to 2:00.
