Teaching Common Text Types

Do you ever take the time to look at the teaching ideas on the New York Times Learning Network? This post from December is worth a look. Find ideas for teaching three common text types: the cause and effect text, the compare and contrast text, and the problem and solution text. (And have a look in the comments section for input from Krashen.)

And as a related aside, there are great sample Venn diagrams all over the internet, many with a light and humorous touch to get students playing with the concept of comparison and contrast. This Tumblr is a fun place to look for samples. This site has Venns as well as other sorts of graphics and charts, all infused with a bit of humor and wisdom.
